Binaural Beats. The Bridge Between Sound, Brainwaves and Consciousness
Sound has fascinated humans for thousands of years. From shamanic drums and Tibetan singing bowls to Gregorian chants and modern meditation music. All these traditions seem to intuitively understand that sound does much more than merely stimulate hearing. Sound influences our attention, emotions, breathing, heart rate and possibly even our state of consciousness.
One of the most researched forms of sound stimulation in recent decades are the so-called binaural beats. Various universities and research groups have investigated whether specific sound frequencies can influence the electrical activity of our brains. Although science has not yet drawn definitive conclusions, interest in this special form of auditory stimulation is growing.
What are binaural beats?
A binaural beat occurs when both ears simultaneously receive a slightly different tone.
Suppose the left ear receives a tone of 400 Hertz and the right ear a tone of 410 Hertz. The brain then does not hear two separate tones, but creates as it were a third, imaginary frequency of 10 Hertz.
This 10 Hertz does not actually exist in the sound itself. It is a neurophysiological phenomenon that arises because both auditory pathways deep in the brainstem converge. The brain automatically calculates the difference between both tones.
This phenomenon was already described in 1839 by the German physicist Heinrich Wilhelm Dove, but only received much scientific interest from the 1970s when researchers began to wonder whether these frequencies could influence the activity of the brain.
Brainwave entrainment
An important concept within this research is brainwave entrainment. Entrainment literally means: synchronising.
In nature we see this constantly happening.
Clock pendulums eventually move together.
Fireflies begin to flash synchronously.
Heart cells automatically start beating in the same rhythm.
Researchers wondered whether brainwaves too can partially adapt to an external rhythmic stimulus, such as light or sound.
This is called the Brainwave Entrainment Hypothesis.
The idea is that when the brain receives a rhythmic stimulus for a longer time, the electrical activity of large groups of nerve cells can partially adapt to that rhythm.
Many participants in studies report improvements in relaxation, concentration, meditation and sleep quality, even when the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms are not yet fully clarified.
The different brainwave states
Our brains continuously produce electrical activity. This activity is measured with an EEG, an electroencephalogram.
Depending on our mental state, different frequencies dominate.
Gamma (30-100 Hz)
Gamma is the fastest brainwave.
This is often associated with:
intensive information processing;
conscious perception;
integration of different brain areas;
creative thinking;
high level of attention.
Research on experienced meditators shows that long-term meditation is sometimes accompanied by increased gamma activity.
Beta (13-30 Hz)
This is our normal waking state.
When we work, analyse, plan or have conversations, our brain is mainly in the beta range.
Too much beta activity can be accompanied by:
stress;
rumination;
mental unrest;
overload.
Alpha (8-12 Hz)
Alpha is often seen as the bridge between thinking and feeling.
Characteristics are:
relaxation;
creativity;
open attention;
daydreaming;
meditative rest.
Many meditation exercises naturally begin in the alpha range.
Theta (4-8 Hz)
Theta is particularly interesting for consciousness research.
These frequencies are seen during:
deep meditation;
hypnagogic states;
lucid dreams;
creative insights;
visualisations;
emotional processing.
Many people experience theta as a state in which intuition seems to become stronger.
Delta (0.5-4 Hz)
Delta is the slowest brainwave.
This dominates during:
deep dreamless sleep;
physical recovery;
growth hormone production;
deep relaxation.
People can also show increased delta activity during very deep meditation.
Why do so many people use binaural beats during meditation?
Meditation has one challenge.
Our thinking remains constantly active.
Binaural beats seem to form an anchor for many people.
The rhythmic auditory stimulation helps to bring attention back to the present moment again and again.
Possible applications
Today, binaural beats are used for a variety of purposes.
Including:
meditation;
relaxation;
stress reduction;
focus;
creativity;
sleep;
visualisation;
breathing exercises;
mindfulness;
personal development.
For many users, binaural beats are not a miracle cure, but a tool that can support an existing meditation or relaxation practice.
Consciousness as a dynamic process
Within consciousness research, there is growing interest in the question of how different brainwave patterns relate to our experience of reality.
Consciousness is not a fixed state.
It changes continuously.
When we are in love.
When we make music.
When we meditate deeply.
When we are fully absorbed in a creative process.
When we sleep.
When we dream.
The electrical activity of our brains also changes constantly.
